As vast number of refugees came pouring out of Hungary they created a serious problem which had to be faced Austria was flooded. Austria bore the main brunt, and generously provided asylum to 174,000 refugees. This action of Austria, despite the burden which the refugee problem placed on her limited economy, is commendable. Proportionately, in relation to its population, this action of Austria would be equivalent to the United States opening her borders to over 4 million refugees. The United States and many other free world countries responded generously to the problem of resettlement of the refugees, as indicated from the following distribution.

Life in the United States

172

It was a refugee flight from Munich Germany. As the plane approached the airport in New Jersey, I looked out the window and noticed an unbelievable amount of cars as far as the eye can see. After the plane landed we were placed onto a large spacious bus and as we moved along the highway there were yet more cars. I remarked to a fellow refugee that Americans are very smart because they have the ability to keep a large number of cars moving at high speed -although I was convinced that this parade of cars all started from the airport and was meant to impress us. But after a while it became clear that this was not the case. Cars were funneling into a common roadway at same high rate of speed.

December 6 was nearing Christmas time. Since the communist in Hungary did not allow Christmas celebration, I had never seen houses decorated for this occasion. I had to pinch myself to make sure this was not a dream. The sight and feeling was like that of being in fairy land. It was absolutely unbelievable
